Instructional Design Scholarship Focuses on Tech, Not Theory

Researchers analyzed all instructional design research published between 2007 and 2017. They found a strong bias in favor of computer-based technologies and relatively little research on learning theory.

They also discovered some bad news for the open access trend:

Among the journals in this dataset, the top‐performing open access journal was Journal of Educational Technology and Society. Unfortunately, this journal recently was shut down, and is no longer accepting submissions. This is a tremendous loss to the field, as the journal published 1001 papers in our data set, and two of the top‐cited papers.
